Project Detail

The Government of Thailand is preparing an integrated urban project in five regional cities as an important part of its program to promote the development of the three peripheral regions - the North, the Northeast, and the South.  The cities included in the project are Chiang Mai in the North, Khon Kaen and Nakorn Ratchasima (Korat) in the Northeast, and Songkhla and Hat Yai in the South.  The project’s objectives are to enhance especially low-income families, and strengthen local administration.

The Government’s strategy for accelerating the development of these cities is threefold:

  1. Improvement of infrastructure and service facilities in order to create conditions conductive to employment generation, expansion of economic activities, and improvement of public health especially in low income areas.
  2. Strengthening municipal governments by improving their management and increasing their revenues, particularly increasing income from property taxes.
  3. Direct attention of employment generation, primarily by encouraging small industries, agro-industries and tourism.

The Feasibility and Engineering Studies are carried out with the help of a grant from the UNDP Special Fund Sector.  They are part of a continuing process of engineering and implementation of infrastructure development in the five cities.  The municipalities are responsible for the implementation, but since their technical capacity is limited they will be supported by line agencies, mainly PWD (Public Works Department) of the Ministry of Interior (MOI).

The Detailed Designs are carried out later with the help of a grant from the Australian Development Assistance Bureau (ADAB).
